Of writing and competition

Falling short from what is expected of me is one of my biggest fears.

Not because I'm a pleaser(Now be honest, I do sound in denial right?) but because I, myself hate incompetence. Ok that may sound too harsh, perhaps its the lack of will power and drive to become someone better that irks me the most.

In as much as we want to award ourselves the BEST in our respective fields, there will always arise someone BETTER. The competition who threatens to overthrow us from the pedestal. The one person who has the power to make us feel inferior or worst, second best.

As far as I was able to observe, every person has an ego, an ego unwelcome of being trashed upon. That's why we hate the existence of a certain opposition. We deny change from the conventional flow. We're too complacent to the point of being stagnant.

No growth, no progress.

And we continue to question why our government is far behind the other countries whom we used to be on top of. By choosing to just sit around and not work hard for the goals we want to get our hands on, sadly, that spells out resistance to evolution and abundance itself.

Same goes in writing. No pain, no gain, as they say.

Words, as we know are more powerful than a sword (some national hero uttered that, me thinks its Jose Rizal, not sure though).

True enough. This has recently been proven when a popularly-loved talk show host got ostracized (I love you jobert) and rallies were waged against corrupt government (fine, people power). In short, it could instigate change.

But before that happens you have to first master the art and craft of writing. Words are too volatile and forceful, to be regarded loosely by some stupid character who knows little about things like corporate social responsibility and the stimulus response theory. Too technical to elaborate.

What I'm trying to point out is that you have to be good at it, no impeccable would be more appropriate, when it comes to writing. One slip and you could be sued, another one and  you could start a chain of misinterpretation to your readers.

I'm in no position to cite a list of what-to-dos for writer wannabes, for I'm currently struggling to brush up on my writing myself, but lemme share to you some quote that my college writing professor always remind us.

"WRITE TO EXPRESS, NOT TO IMPRESS"

Let the words find their way onto the paper or the monitor, wherever you write. Write without inhibitions, pour yourself out and do not be mindful of the number of Yays and Nays you get, after all they can only do so much against you.

To aspiring writers:
You cannot be that high-regarded writer overnight. It's gonna cost you to read books, tons of 'em, continuous update on your experience and intellect, and that savvy and passion for writing.

All of which I think I have(let me make it clear that I'm not an awarded writer yet :p), but sometimes I feel like I need a competition. Someone to push me beyond my comfort zone and yell to my face that I'm not good enough. I need my adventure, a catalyst for a good change that is.

em, this is very inspiring. "write to express, not to impress" is my golden rule. and you're right, we sometimes need a healthy competition so that we'll not stagnate in our comfort zones.

i like it when the readers tend to correct me with the entry i did. even though we are entitled to our opinions (especially on our blogs), it's great to know people who disagree with what you're saying.

actually that's what generally happens in my blog nga po e. I write anything and everything that's been lurking inside my head. Kaya sometimes it stems from one topic to another, Im such a clutter-minded creature that's why :p

When readers agree for a good point, I find it very refreshing. The idea that I made them think and better yet, be critical is good. meaning my words make sense, that I got my point across.

That's what's writing is all about naman, you would always have critics on every piece that you write.
